After a very labor intensive process, my first ‘hard-copy’ book was finally released today, January the 6th, 2010.

When I got into the fitness industry I had no idea that my name would ever end up on the cover of a book. But I have to admit, it is kinda cool to walk into a book store and see my work sitting there on the shelf – I feel like a proud parent.

But more importantly, having this book released allows me the opportunity to reach an even greater audience and help even more women overcome their troubles with problem arms – and that is what this is all about – you the reader.

Thank you to everyone who has already picked up their copy (lots of my fellow Canadians must have gotten up nice and early to get their copy because Amazon.ca was already back-ordered this morning), and to those that haven’t yet, I don’t often ask for much – but if you can afford the 10 bucks for a copy – your support means a great deal to me – so thank you in advance.

The fitness book market is very competitive – and the more support this book receives – the more likley I will be able to publish another in the future.

Thanks again to each one of you - I did this for you, so I hope you enjoy it and put it to good use.

Quite a few months ago, during the height of the Michelle Obama Arms Frenzy, I put together a workout specifically designed to help any women get arms like Michelle Obama. That article caught the attention of some major media players, leading to interviews and features, and eventually, a book deal. In fact, Totally Toned Arms is now available for pre-order on Amazon here…

Totally Toned Arms: Get Michelle Obama Arms in 21 Days

But it seems the world can’t get enough of Michelle O, more specifically, her style of dress and her body.

Now the Internet is abuzz with talk about Michelle’s Obama’s legs. After a recent trip to the Grand Canyon, where Michelle was photographed in shorts that reveal incredibly toned legs, women all over the world are, yet again, asking how she manages to maintain such a great body, with what one can only assume, is an obscenely hectic schedule.

Michelle Obama's Shorts

Legs can be a tricky subject for many women. All women want long and lean thighs, that accentuate height and slimness, while avoiding the dreaded ‘thunder thighs’ that can be so embarrassing. Unlike arms, if you have legs you aren’t happy with, it’s pretty much impossible to conceal them. Adding to the difficulty factor is the fact that women have a predisposition to storing more body fat in their lower body, in addition to a tendency to build muscle in the lower body relatively quickly as well. Have you always found that your lower body is disproportionately strong compared to your upper body? That’s why.

To get lean and sexy legs like Michelle Obama, it takes a very special approach. You must focus on exercises that will burn off the body fat from your legs, while at the same time ensuring that you don’t use machines and exercises that will cause you to increase the girth of your thighs.

A side note: Most ‘leg’ machines in the gym, and in fact, most ‘women specific’ machines, actually cause the legs to bulk up. For example the inner and outer thigh machine, and the total hip machine. These exercises focus on building muscles in areas that you actually want to slim down. These machines need to be avoided at all costs if you want ‘Michelle Obama Legs’!

So what do you do?

Well, if you own the Go Sleeveless Elite package, then you’ve probably come across a special program called the Thunder Thigh Eliminator Program. This is a workout program designed specifically for women to trim away fat from the thighs, with specific emphasis on reducing fat around the knees and inner leg as well. It also focuses on bringing out maximum muscle definition while specifically avoiding exercises known to increase muscle bulk.

If you already have this program, and you want to get legs like Michelle Obama, then its time to crack it open and get started.

Michelle Obama's Legs

However, for those of you who don’t yet have your hands on this program, then here is one of my favorite lower body exercises for women. This is taken directly from the Thunder Thigh Eliminator Program

Scissors

Lie on your back with your hands out to the side for support.

Hold a stability ball between your legs, and lift you legs out straight in front of you, keeping your feet from touching the ground.

Keep squeezing the ball between your legs, then rotate your feet so one is directly above the other, pause, then rotate the opposite direction to switch which foot is on top.

At this point you may lower your legs back down and rest for a brief moment before beginning your next rep.

As you improve with this exercise, try to complete more reps without touching your feet down and resting.

One complete rep is moving one foot from top to bottom to top again.

This is a fantastic exercise for toning the legs, with specific emphasis on the inner thighs. It also works your abdominal muscles like crazy, and will strengthen your lower back in the process. You might not be able to do too many reps to begin with, but start and see what you can get, then build up by one or two a day for about 10 days. While this is only one exercise, and not a complete leg toning program, it’s a great ‘overall’ thigh exercise and will get you started until you can begin the Thunder Thigh Eliminator Program.

UPDATE: Check out the video for this workout by clicking the link at the end of the post.

Kate Gosselin, star of TLC’s hit reality TV show ‘John and Kate plus 8’, has created nearly as much of a media frenzy over her body, as for her recent marital issues made public by the tabloids.

And while there are no shortage of websites and magazines flashing the latest juicy details of the Gosselin’s not-so-private life; in all of the drama, Kate’s secrets to transforming her body have remained just that; a complete secret.

Many women, especially moms, are dying to know how Kate has made such incredible changes to her body in such a relatively short amount of time. Viewers have watched Kate transform from a frumpy housewife, struggling to shake off the extra layers of baby weight in the show’s initial seasons, to a fit and yummy mummy with a sculpted body that any women would be proud showing off at the beach.

So how does she do it? What has Kate Gosselin done to get that sculpted body and those sexy arms, even after having 8 children? While it’s no secret that Kate underwent plastic surgery to correct the excess sagging skin on her stomach that resulted from the carrying of twins and then sextuplets to term, (a problem that most moms won’t have to contend with) it’s not her stomach that has women all over the world wanting to know more about Kate’s workout routine.

Kate has literally re-created her entire body, not just her tummy. She has clearly lost significant body fat, slimmed down her thighs and calves, shaved inches of her arms, toned her back and shoulders, and brought out significant muscle definition throughout her whole physique; something a tummy tuck could never do on it’s own.

On Kate’s most recent appearance on Oprah, when questioned about her workout, she stated that she gets up early everyday to do an hour on the treadmill or elliptical machine. However, she offered little insight beyond that. And while that may seem simple enough, most moms simply cannot afford an extra hour each day to workout when they’ve got little ones demanding their attention nearly 100% of the time.

How To Get Results Like Kate Gosselin, In Less Time
As a personal trainer specializing in women’s fat loss and body sculpting, I have helped numerous moms shed pounds of baby fat, sculpt and tone their physiques, and get their pre-baby bodies back (and often, better!) One look at Kate Gosselin’s new body, and I can tell you from experience that cardio alone wasn’t enough to get the job done; there is more to the story than that. The great new is, if you are busy mom and don’t have an hour per day to spare, you can still get results like Kate, and I can even show you how to do it in less time.

The Custom ‘Kate Gosselin Workout Routine’.
To get a total body transformation like Kate, the main goal should be to melt as much fat as possible, while revving up the metabolism so your body will easily let go of those extra baby pounds. At the same time, you will want to be sculpting and toning the muscle underneath, so you aren’t left with any sagging skin after your weight loss.

My customized ‘Kate Gosselin Workout Routine’ utilizes a principal called the ‘Afterburn Effect’ that will allow you to get a workout that is as effective as Kate’s, but in far less time. The Afterburn Effect is created by using shorter, interval style cardio sessions, with a short-rest, circuit-style strength training program that elevates the heart rate and keeps it up throughout the entire workout.

This routine can be done 5 days a week, and will hit every major muscle group in your body to bring out maximum tone and definition. It puts particular emphasis on naturally lifting the breasts, giving the waist a more tapered and narrow look, and targeting the inner and outer thighs to create lean and sexy legs.

Cardio Portion – 12.5 minutes
Equipment: Treadmill or Elliptical
Warmup: 2 minutes to bring heart rate up to 60% or higher*
Intervals: 3 x 90 second high intensity intervals at 80% or higher with 3 x 120 second low intensity intervals at 70% or lower
Cooldown: None necessary – immediately start the strength training circuit below.

Strength Training Circuit – 17.5 minutes
Use a weight that allows you to achieve 8-10 reps for each exercise (but not too light that you can do more, or too heavy that you can’t get at least 7). Complete one exercise immediately after the other without rest, and complete as many sets as you can in 17.5 minutes. Record the number of sets you complete for each exercise, and try to increase one set for one exercise, each successive day, without increasing your workout time.

Exercise List
a) Plie Squat with Shoulder Press
b) Reverse Lunge on Bench with Dumbbells
c) Wide Grip Lat Pull Down
d) Wide Grip Horizontal Row
e) Incline Curl To Chest Press with Dumbbells
f) Narrow Width Bench Pushups
g) Seated Side Band/Cable Rotation

While this program will work wonders to kick-start your fat loss and body toning, and get you well on your way to transforming your body like Kate Gosselin, it is not recommended that you follow it for more than three weeks. After three weeks you will get better results by switching to the Go Sleeveless © program, which will have you alternating between two different workout routines that will allow for greater muscle recovery, while avoiding any plateaus.

For video demonstrations for each of these exercises, check out Kate Gosselin’s Workout Video.

*Detailed explanation for how to calculate your target heart rate zones can be found in any of the Go Sleeveless © programs in the ‘Calculating Your Target Intensity Zones’ section.

This week’s homework is in the form of a challenge that I am calling my Michelle Obama’s Arms Challenge.

Since I wrote an article a while back on how to get toned and sculpted arms so you can Go Sleeveless like Michelle Obama, I have been getting swamped by the press and questions from readers and clients alike. That article actually landed me an interview with CNN, and later went on to be published by ABC news and BET.com as well (among others).

In that article I released a quick home workout that will help you get arms like Michelle Obama’s, and it was an incredible hit.

Therefore, for this week’s homework, I thought I would resurrect that workout and turn it into a challenge. I’ve tweaked it a little, and changed a couple small details to make it a little more…uh, fun .

This workout requires no special equipment, but that doesn’t make it easy. It will seriously melt some fat off those arms and tone them up on no time. Okay, so here’s whats up:

Michelle Obama’s Arm Challenge Workout

A) 2 minutes of jogging in place or jumping jacks

B) Superset #1
15 No-Jump Burpees (substitute with squat + overhead press if you cannot do Burpees)
15 Step-Ups
15 Deep Plie Squats

C) 2 minutes of jogging in place or jumping jacks

D) Rest 60 seconds

E) 2 minutes of jogging in place or jumping jacks

F) Superset #2
16 x 6 second holds – Alternating Plank
15 Narrow Grip Incline Pushups
15 Chair Dips

G) 2 minutes of jogging in place or jumping jacks

H) Rest 60 Seconds

Set a time limit for 30 minutes, and see how many sets (A through H) you can get through. If you aren’t yet strong enough to complete the reps I’ve listed, that’s okay, just do as many as you can. If you can get 10, great. If you can get the full 15 even better. If you can do more, FANTASTIC!

Keep a pencil and paper handy, write out the workout, and during each rest interval write down the reps you get so you remember how many you did.

Then, REPORT BACK TO ME!

In the comments section below, tell me how many total sets you managed to get through in 30 minutes (again, one full set is A through H), and how many reps you managed on your FIRST and LAST set. If you are working hard, your reps should start to drop pretty dramatically. However, don’t let yourself slack off, push yourself to try and get as many reps as possible for every set you do.

Here is a more recent article that I was interviewed for by the Bay Area Newsgroup (California)

Move over, Madonna. Michelle Obama’s got guns.

Since she walked into the White House, Obama has selected fashion-forward clothing that flatters her buff arms. She’s on the current cover of Vogue sans sleeves. She wore sleeveless Narciso Rodriguez to the president’s joint session of Congress last month. And she was on a March cover of People magazine in a pink lace dress also lacking sleeves.

Obama has been a fashion icon since she hit the campaign trail two years ago. But the first lady’s toned triceps have received more attention of late. Two weeks ago, she even defended her right to bare arms — a few naysayers have criticized her for showing the skin — on “Good Morning America.” But, most of the attention has been positive. Just in time for spring, Obama is motivating women to get in shape.

“Obama’s arms are popular because she’s not too skinny and she’s not overly muscled,” says Rylan Duggan, a British Columbia Registered Kinesiologist who blogs about defining flab by arms at gosleevelessblog.com. “She’s lean and toned yet still feminine.”

Clients who normally ask for Madonna or Kelly Ripa arms have added Obama to the list, Duggan says. He believes women want to emulate her because she is a busy woman rather than a twenty-something starlet. “She’s the family woman. She’s showing people you can have a great body and be a busy mom. The women I work with are so proud of her for being able to do that. I think it’s fantastic.”

The only thing we know about Obama’s fitness regimen is that she works out with a personal trainer for 90 minutes three days a week. But what does she do to build those biceps? Duggan’s analysis: “I can assure you that she’s not afraid of lifting heavy weights,” he says, adding that many women avoid heavier weights for fear of bulking up.

Duggan, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, is also confident that Obama’s trainer has her on interval training, or bursts of high-intensity cardiovascular exercises followed by minutes of lower-intensity activity. “It’s the most efficient way to work out because you save time, burn more fat and boost metabolism.”

Finally, he says, Obama’s getting buff by working her whole body. Hard. You can do hundreds of bicep curls a week, but if you’re not engaging your entire body, you won’t eliminate those bat wings, Duggan says. “Spot reduction is a myth,” he adds. “The only way to burn body fat is to lose it from your whole body.”

In fact, exercises that use multiple muscle groups, like squats, are Duggan’s favorite for toning the upper body.

The reason, again, that I choose the squat as one of the best arm exercises is because it burns so much body fat. Remember, you have to attack flabby arms from a whole-body perspective.

It seems counterintuitive, but really, it’s the only way to get real success.

If you haven’t yet read my free e-book on the 3 Golden Rules of Eliminating Flabby and Saggy Arms, then please head over to Go Sleeveless and grab your free copy now. It will clear up a lot of confusion for you and help you get on the road to toned and sculpted arms today.

PS. If there is enough interest, I might actually film the workout I recommended in my past article. If this is something you want, just leave me a comment. If I get enough responses I will take an afternoon and film the workout and make it available to all my readers for free.
